‘BUG BITES’

The Future Protein Source for Athletes

Project Overview

Bug Bites is a brand focused on changing the stigma surrounding edible insects, targeting athletes and health-conscious individuals mindful of their protein intake. Through witty branding and emphasis on nutritional benefits like high protein content and a favorable protein to fat ratio sourced from edible insects, the brand aims to convince athletes to incorporate them into their diets.

Design Goals

The project aims to understand why consumers are averse to edible insects and devise innovative strategies to address these concerns, thereby enhancing the acceptability of alternative proteins in the mainstream market. Through creative packaging designs and effective communication, the project seeks to challenge existing perceptions and highlight the nutritional benefits and sustainability of edible insects, bridging the gap between consumer preferences and the potential of alternative protein sources.

OVERCOMING THE

‘ICK FACTOR’

The aversion towards edible insects in Western cultures stems from historical and cultural biases, alongside the industrialization of food production. Conversely, in many other parts of the world, insects are embraced as a traditional and sustainable food source due to cultural norms and nutritional benefits.

Through my research conducted via a survey and workshop, I found that my target audience is generally hesitant to try edible insects, with less than 10% of participants willing to try whole insects. These patricipants where also identified as adventurous eaters. Many individuals expressed strong reluctance, particularly towards consuming whole insects, with most refusing them entirely.

However, emphasizing the high protein content of edible insects often helped to sway their opinions, leading some to overcome their initial fears.
Initial Sketches

In these inital sketches I was trying to brainstorm some witty and relatable ways to get my audience’s attention. More casual and informal graphics seem to be more popular and seem like a good way to grab the attention of the viewer. I was also trying to go for an ‘anti-bulling’ campaign for these graphics to get people to sympathize with the edible insects and maybe give them a chance.
